Which family line did you come through? Symbolic clues from the energy of your arcanum
08.09.2026
Every family passes on stories, values and ways of reacting. Sometimes we recognise ourselves in a father's resolve, at other times in a mother's sensitivity. But our inheritance can also hold the echo of a grandmother, a grandfather, or experiences the family rarely speaks about.
Read as a symbolic language, the arcana can help us reflect on these resemblances. The question “which family line did I come through?” becomes an invitation to explore which family patterns we express, and which ones we choose to transform.
The masculine arcana: the energy of action
In the classification we start from, arcana 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 16 and 19 are associated with masculine energy, oriented towards action.
On a symbolic level they speak of initiative, perseverance, structure and the need for concrete results. A person who recognises themselves in this description may prefer to solve a problem straight away, to speak directly, and to know clearly where they are heading.
In balance, these qualities can be expressed through responsibility, courage and the ability to set limits. When they become rigid, they can take the form of excessive control, inflexibility, or difficulty in showing vulnerability. An orientation towards action does not mean the absence of emotion.
For exploring your family, this energy can open questions about authority, work, protection and the way decisions are made:
- Who taught me that I must be strong and manage on my own?
- Who do I resemble when I lead, when I defend myself, or when I enter a conflict?
- In which branch of the family do I recognise the same rules and expectations?
You can begin this reflection with your father's side, but follow the real examples: these behaviours may just as easily come from your mother or your maternal grandmother.
The feminine arcana: the energy of emotion and receptivity
In a symbolic reading, the emphasis falls on sensitivity, receptivity, creativity and the importance of the emotional atmosphere. A person who recognises themselves here may notice first how they feel in a situation, what the other person is conveying, and what an experience means for their relationships.
In balance, these tendencies can support empathy, closeness and creative expression. When they become heavy, they can show up as difficulty in setting limits, a constant search for approval, or taking on other people's emotions.
This association does not necessarily describe physical appearance, and it does not belong exclusively to women. The terms “masculine” and “feminine” are used here as symbols; anyone can express both kinds of energy.
To explore what you inherited, you can ask yourself:
- From whom did I learn to give and to receive affection?
- Who do I resemble when I express my emotions, or when I withdraw?
- In which part of the family do I meet the same way of caring for others?
The maternal line can be a starting point for this reflection, without being an automatic conclusion.
How to recognise the family thread that repeats in your life
The classification of the arcana offers a theme to explore. To connect that theme to a branch of the family, you need concrete stories and behaviours.
Choose a pattern you notice in yourself: the need for control, the fear of conflict, the ease of showing affection, or the tendency to always put others first. Then look for resemblances in both branches of the family.
For example, if you recognise yourself in an arcanum of action and find it hard to ask for help, ask yourself who lived by the rule “I have to manage on my own”. It may be your father — but it may equally be a grandmother who carried the responsibilities of the household alone.
If you recognise yourself in a feminine arcanum and feel you have to keep everyone at peace, notice who held that role in the family. The relevant connection is the behaviour you recognise, not the person's sex.
Write down what you received that was good, too: the ability to build, generosity, creativity, patience. Exploring what you inherited deserves to include both the difficulties and the resources.
You can carry themes from both family lines
You may recognise yourself in the resolve of one branch of the family and in the sensitivity of the other. You may repeat one behaviour in a relationship and a different one at work. You do not have to choose a single belonging.
Nothing in what has been presented here produces a method of calculation that establishes “the line you came through”. The division into masculine and feminine arcana describes two symbolic categories; tying them strictly to the paternal and maternal lines would be an additional interpretation.
Used with this clarity, the arcanum can become the beginning of an honest conversation with yourself and with your family: what did I take on? What supports me? And what do I want to pass on?
