Constructive criticism: philosophy, or just more stress?

26.08.2026

You do not have to win every argument in order to be right

Lately I have been thinking a great deal about one thing: how much energy we spend trying to prove who we are, what we believe in, and why we have the right to see life in a particular way.

I have felt this in my own field as well.

Numerology has been criticised, mocked, attacked. Numerologists have been put in the dock. Sometimes the criticism is legitimate, and even necessary. Every field needs questions, needs discernment, needs people who say: “Show me why you believe that.”

But there is an enormous difference between examining an idea and despising the person who holds it.

And that is where the problem begins.

Because at some point you risk no longer practising what you love, and instead spending your time defending the fact that you are allowed to love it.

I fell into that trap myself.

I explained. I argued. I answered. I tried to show that, beyond the numbers, my philosophy has always been to help a person observe themselves more closely, ask themselves questions, see the patterns they repeat and find meaning in their experience.

But then I asked myself a very simple question:

How much of my life do I want to spend proving to others that I have the right to think differently?

Because our bodies do not experience conflict merely as ideas.

Psychological stress activates real biological systems: the sympathetic nervous system, the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, the secretion of stress hormones. In the short term, this reaction helps us. It is the mechanism by which the body prepares to face a threat.

The problem appears when the “threat” never ends.

A comment. A reply. Another comment. Another demonstration. Another person who has to be shown they are wrong.

Modern medicine also speaks of allostatic load — the accumulated cost that repeated adaptation to stress can have on the body.

And I find it remarkable, if we look at it philosophically as well: how many arguments do we win intellectually, and pay for biologically?

Marcus Aurelius wrote about retreating into oneself. Not about fleeing the world, but about the capacity not to let every outside noise become an inner one.

I believe maturity begins exactly there.

Not when you no longer have opponents.

But when you no longer feel the need to turn every opponent into a trial.

Not everyone has to like me.

Not everyone has to believe in numerology.

Not everyone has to believe in astrology, spirituality, psychology, or in the same philosophy of life that I hold.

Science must be left to investigate. Criticism must be left to ask. And we must have enough maturity to examine our own convictions, not merely defend them.

But nor should we turn a difference of opinion into a permanent state of war.

Because life is far too short for that.

Five years from now, a large part of the quarrels that seem enormous today will no longer matter. Ten years from now, we probably will not even remember who had the last word.

But no one gives us back the time we spent there.

Perhaps the real victory is not having the last word.

Perhaps the real victory is reaching a point where you can say: this is my perspective. I am willing to examine it, to correct it if needed, and to learn. But I no longer need to argue with the entire world for the right to exist within my own philosophy.

And then to get on with your road.

To build.

To study.

To help the people you can help.

To let the results, the time and your own growth speak for themselves.

Because peace does not begin the moment everyone finally agrees with you.

Peace begins the moment you no longer need them to.

With love, I invite you to think deeply about what you have just read.
